Need to know how to make your rental home look better?

So, you've accomplished another one of your bucket list items: renting your own place and living in it alone. However, now you find yourself moved in, unpacked and... in plain apartment. Since it is a rental home you start to think that you will never be able to give the place your personal touch because of the limitations. Well, we have good news for you. You CAN decorate a rental home WITHOUT risking a penny of your security deposit so that you can get back to relishing in the fact that you finally moved out on your own.

First, you want to make a budget and look at what do have right now. This will cut costs and make sure you don't buy in duplicate or overbuy with things you don't need. For example, your mother's old coffee table that she gave you could make for a fabulous focal point just by adding a fresh coat of some bright paint. Pick a color, any color. Second, think of things you want or need. An example of a need would be a mirror so that you can be sure your outfit looks okay before you head out in the morning. A want would be the awesome piece of artwork you saw downtown last week that would look great in your living room. If it fits the budget, great! If not, look for nice, less expensive items at your local department store for some cool knock-offs.

Finally, think color, structure and style. Who are you? A good way to start is to take a look at your closet. Many of us tend to wear a certain color and not even notice it. Also, by color we don't necessarily mean the walls. Landlords may not allow you to paint the walls, so definitely check before you do any of that. However, you can add color to your rental home with decorative pillows, rugs, wall art, curtains, flowers and more. Pinterest is also a great site that users share lots of DIY (do it yourself) activities that can save money and give you unique items for home decoration.

Tips on how to be a good neighbor!

Being a good neighbor is as simple as having a positive attitude towards your relationship with the people that live in your same community. Whether you are a top executive or a stay-at-home parent, we all live in the same area and want the same thing: a safe, friendly and caring environment for us and our family to live in.

At ISM Property Management, we encourage our tenants to live in a place they feel comfortable, a place they can call home surrounded with people that could become lifetime friendships.

We would like to share with you some tips that you can practice in order to make the most out of your neighbor relationships!
  • A simple hello: a greeting and a smile is the start of every relationship. Neighbors should say hello with a caring smile each time they meet. Go the extra mile and ask questions about how they are doing. Some people will gladly appreciate it.
  • Socialize: with such busy schedules, it is nice to stop and chat even for a few minutes. This is the way new friendships start. Make plans with them outside of your homes or invite them over for dinner.
  • Get to know them: getting to know your neighbors increases the ability to share, socialize and have an extra hand in case you need it. Ask questions and share experiences, this is the best way to get to know people.
  • Be there for them: if a neighbor asks for a favor and you are in the ability to do it, go ahead! It will benefit you later on and a nice friendship can start from this.
  • Security: being a good neighbor offers you a sense of security. Knowing who lives around you and their habits, can help detect if there is any situation a neighbor might need help with.
  • Go the extra mile! There is always something more you can do. Host or help plan a party, start or support neighborhood programs, welcome new neighbors with a special treat, coordinate neighborhood activities and much more!

Ideas to Decorate Your Rental Home Without Risking Your Security Deposit!

Apartment For RentResidents are often afraid to decorate a rental home because of the restrictions included in the lease agreement. However, just because you are renting a home, doesn’t mean that you are entitled to make
it your own. These are some great tips on how to make you rental home your own, without risking your security deposit. This will keep both yourself and your landlord happy.

1. Buy a rug! Rugs are often inexpensive and can make a room “pop”. The also help protect the flooring in the area while adding decorative style as they come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors.

2. Rearrange your furniture. This can be done by anyone who doesn’t necessarily want to add anything new to the space, but wants it to look different. Take a piece of paper and draw out the room, along with other pieces and try rearranging them on paper first. This will help you save a lot of time and energy.

3. Paint your favorite furniture pieces. Looking for something different but are on a tight budget? Take some furniture pieces and add some color to your home. This will make a huge difference even if it just involves the coffee table or a dresser.

4. Memo/picture boards are your new best friends. Nothing says “welcome to my home” like a memo or picture board in the entryway. Use this place to put your favorite snapshots of you with friends or family, hang your to-do list and important mailing. This is both convenient and adds a sense of uniqueness to your home.

5. Add curtains. This is yet another way to add style as they come in virtually any color and designed to fit your specific budget depending on what you are looking for. If your room is missing color, try going for something bold that will make this a focal point in the room.

Apartment For RentRemember, just because you are renting a home doesn’t mean you can’t do everything possible to make you home unique.

It is important to speak to your landlord first before painting or making any permanent changes in order to be sure you won’t lose your deposit or break any lease terms in doing so.
